Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
