Whenever a prominent honors show nears, one notices a demand to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
