Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest certain calls from the official, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
